When you are selling your home it is important to target as much of the population as you can. Many young professionals are now at the point in their lives that they are buying their first homes. You need to meet their needs now more than ever before.

So how do you target Millennials to your home? Millennials are the first generation to have lived through internet access through most of their adolescence. This means that they rely heavily on apps, pictures, and visuals. They also scour the internet entirely for their home purchases.

If you presently own a condo or smaller home, make sure that you target these buyers. Here are some ideas to appeal to this generation:

  • Professional pictures: How your home appears online is important. Make sure your pictures are attractive and professional. Remember the sale of your home may be at the click of the mouse. Always use a professional photographer who has expertise in real estate.
  • Eco-friendly: Highlight any energy efficient appliances or upgrades. Energy efficient windows and self-regulating thermostats are also very attractive.
  • Be honest: Make sure any problems you may have had in your home is transparent. Millennials will have home inspections that may detail any problems you may have had in your home. This could be a deal breaker if you try to hide anything.
  • Seller’s binder: Keep a binder with information on utility costs, internet service, entertainment and restaurants nearby, and access to transit service. Costs are very important to this younger generation.
  • Minimalism: Many Millennials prefer open concept homes with lots of light and minimum and modern furniture. Professional home staging is a must.
  • Great outdoors: Highlight any bike paths, sports facilities, parks, and nature trails.
  • Don’t overprice: Price is very important as many young buyers have student loans and are looking for a home that fits their budget. Make sure you know the true value of your home.
  • Move in ready: Although some Millennials do like fixer-uppers, most of this generation prefer a move-in ready home. Often, they don’t have the extra cash to make home improvements

These are just some ideas our Anne Winch Ottawa Real Estate and Staging Team would suggest on how to attract these buyers to your showings.
