Getting your home prepped usually starts with decluttering. What happens if you have decluttered, and your home still looks too busy? Your kitchen is one of the most essential areas of the home and often can be a dealbreaker when selling your home – especially if it looks untidy. A kitchen has a value between 5 and 15% of your home’s value. So don’t skip this area of your home.

Countertops have too much stuff
We tend to keep too much stuff on our counters. Over time this can leave less space. Messy counters are not appealing to buyers and may give the impression that the rest of your home may need to go on a diet. Put away everything you can and then add a couple of items back on the countertops.
Here are some examples of what can go on the counter:
- Coffee station with some nice cups
- Cutting boards, fresh fruit displayed in a basket
- A small display of spices
- Vinegars and oils
Pantry and cupboard
Decide what appliances you use that may be stored in your cupboards. Downsize items that may be duplicates or do the same job. For example, a food processor can slice and dice and grind food items. If you have utensils that are duplicates of what your food processor can do, you may think of donating these items. Check if appliances are not working or not used. These may need to find a new home.
In the pantry, you may find that you have items that have seen better times. Are there pantry items that you don’t use or haven’t used in a while? Perhaps your eating habits have changed. Here are some ideas for your pantry:
- Organize cereals, flour, sugar, etc. in clear modular storage units
- Organize items by category
- Check best before dates and purge away!
