According to the Canadian Association of Movers, we tend to move residences 5 to 6 times in our lifetime. Moving is said to be one of the top five most stressful events in our lifetime. Why are people moving? They often are looking for either a first home, bigger housing or a better neighbourhood to reside in. There are also retirees who are looking to downsize and manage their budget better by choosing a smaller abode.
Our Anne Winch Real Estate and Staging Team would like to take some stress off your shoulders by providing information on choosing the best moving company. When you decide to hire movers, not all companies are the same. Choosing the right movers will impact the experience you will receive.
Let’s start with the basics – the type of move!
Whether you are moving down the street or to a different province, you want movers with the right experience to handle your precious cargo. For example, a long-distance move comes with unique challenges. Factor in whether it is a residential or a commercial move. If you are also moving your business, you need movers who are up to the challenge too.
The hiring process.
You will need to do your homework. Apart from speaking with the moving company, do a little bit of research. Look for a company that is properly licensed and accredited. Find online reviews to see how the company functions. Check with friends, neighbours, or co-workers to see if they have had an honest and credible moving company in the recent past.
Get an estimate!
Select a company that is willing to give you an in-person estimate and that will look at the inventory you wish to move. Check if the estimates are binding or non-binding. You want to know how they will calculate your costs so that you won’t be surprised by hidden costs. Don’t ever sign a blank document!
Special considerations?
Communicate with your moving company about any large items or hazardous items. Are you moving a hot tub? Maybe you are moving a piano or pool table. You need to talk to your moving company so that you won’t be in for a surprise on moving day.
