Have you ever looked around your house and said OK I need to get some renovations done? It can be tempting to take out a large loan and remodel your house all at once. However, most people don’t have the budget for that. It might be easier to plan which areas of your home you decide to tackle first. Take it just one room at a time you will be much better off.
Plan, plan and plan some more!
Plan what you want done in a room is your first step in remodelling. Set a budget and stick to it. You may have to make some really hard decisions on what you can afford and what you can’t.
- Do you need the most expensive fixtures?
- Are you happy with other fixtures that aren’t as expensive?
Remember if you don’t stick to a set budget, you may not be able to remodel other rooms when you are finished.
Pick your first room.
If you are moving into a new home, try to remodel one room that needs it the most. You might want to pick a kitchen or bathroom that needs some TLC. These are areas we use the most and are better tackled before you move in. You won’t be inconvenienced if they are done ahead of time. Perhaps you only have one bathroom. Then you might want to tackle that room before you move in.
If you are already in your home, then you might want to tackle an easier room. Perhaps you only need to refresh one room with paint. That is easy and you will have a room completed in your home.
You might have to go with the flow!
Not all renovations go smoothly. The truth is that something always comes up when you do renovations. You need to go with the flow and chill out a bit when problems do arise. Always keep the lines of communication open with your contractor to make sure that things are going the way you planned. Keep an eye on your renovations in case a mistake is made. It is easier to fix in the beginning than at the end of the renovation.
Looking for some easy renovation ideas?
Our Anne Winch Real Estate and Staging Team has a few ideas to offer that virtually anyone can do, and you don’t have to be an expert in carpentry or renovations. Sometimes it is the little things that can completely transform a room and it doesn’t take a lot of skill or money.
Here are some ideas we think you may like:
- Nothing can spoil a bathroom more than cracked or mouldy caulking. Re-caulk your baseboards or bathtub for the cost of approx. $1.50-$3.00 linear ft. This is an easy fix and makes a big difference that looks neat and clean. (Hint: do a few trial runs before you take on the larger caulking jobs.)
- Spruce up your laundry room with new tile. Look for sales at your nearest tile or renovation store. These tiles are often around $2.00 sq. ft. There is nothing like some new tile to freshen up your laundry room.
- Add a backsplash to your kitchen for about $25 sq. ft. I know a backsplash may sound like a big undertaking but with today’s tiles and grout, it is simpler than it looks.
- Add floating shelves to your kitchen and bathroom. Add various items of size and texture along with some small greenery to your shelves. The cost varies from $25 and up.
