Many of us would like to stay in our own homes as we age. Whether you are a senior or living in a multi-generational home, we all want a home that can accommodate our needs. It only makes it feasible to do renovations before they are needed. If you slowly make some upgrades, you will be ready for unexpected circumstances. Remember that there are many varieties of materials that are beautiful and can be safe for everyone as they age and keep your home stylish at the same time.
No-curb shower
If a bathroom renovation is on the horizon, you can decide to go for a curb-less shower that will allow you the mobility to get into and out of the shower with ease. You may want to forego the bathtub to avoid slips and falls later in life. However, you can still go for a fashionable sleek and modern look for your shower. It is worth saying that a curb-less shower does need a sloping floor for proper drainage.
Let the light shine in!
Believe it or not but as we turn 50 years old, we need more lighting than our younger years. There is always room for more light in any room. While in our younger years, we can pick any lighting but as we age we need to be more discerning in our light purchases. Recessed pot lights might be ok for some households but they do not deliver the light we need as we age. Invest in LED lighting to up the light factor!
Don’t fall for the wrong flooring
Slip-resistant flooring is a must throughout your home, not just in the bathroom. Engineered wood, luxury vinyl tile and cork are some samples of what you might want to consider. Many opt for luxury vinyl as it can be used throughout the home including in the bathroom.
Make colour your right choice
Vision changes happen throughout our lifetime, especially as we get older. Build colour contrast between walls and trim, doors and openings. Think of making your trim a little darker so that it can be easily seen.
Change out handles
Arthritis can be prevalent in any age group. Handles are one of the fixtures we use the most and we want to be able to operate levers and handles with minimum effort or strength. In addition to a lever push up or down action, also touchless faucets can be very helpful. You can also add anti-scald locks on showers to prevent burns.
Install grab bars
Grab bars can be helpful if you have loved ones who are elderly in your home. Gone are the ugly grab bars of the past as there are many designer options to pick from. You can find designs in brass, oil-rubbed bronze and more. Look for designs that don’t look like “grab bars” with styles in arcs or wavy patterns. These designs can easily be incorporated into your bathroom in a beautiful, useful and stylish way.
