At one time or another, we all will need to downsize. Whether it is because of retirement, cost of living or you just want less space to clean. Trying to get rid of items or even categorize what you need to move forward can be a full-time job! We thought you might want to consider our idea of a downsizing plan.
If you are moving into a new residence, it may be necessary to downsize your personal items and furniture to be able to fit into your new place. Here are some tips on what can be done to help you on your way.
Plan
Take a tour of your new place. As you go through each room and storage area, your measuring tape will be your best friend. Sometimes rooms can be deceiving in size, so it is always better to measure and keep track of the measurements of each room. This will then be your guide on what each room can accommodate. As you decide what you want to keep, start a room at a time or it can get overwhelming. Begin with the furniture first and then work through the smaller items.
Sort, toss or donate
Declutter before you move. You won’t be able to fit all your present furniture and belongings in a smaller space. Perhaps you are going to a smaller kitchen, and you won’t have as much counter or cupboard space as you had before.
It can be an emotional roller coaster ride when you go to a smaller home and sometimes its hard to part with certain items. Sort items and be strict with yourself with a “yes/no” routine. If you have a ‘maybe’ pile you will have to go through it again.
Capture your memories
If you have a lot of photographs, for example, digitize your photos to save room and share them with your family. Take pictures of items you may have to donate or give to other family members. You will always have those memories to keep.
Scrapbooking is another way to keep items together – old letters, movie stubs, etc. You can also create artwork by displaying some items in a shadow box. Keep in mind your space limitations and truly keep only things that are valuable.
