In an era of having more hardwood or luxury vinyl in our homes, you may need to warm your rooms up a bit.

Define your space
When you are choosing a rug for a certain area, integrate it into your overall design. Use it as a tool to define the area. For example, in the living room, you want this to look like a place where friends and family may wish to gather. Always think of other rooms where you may wish to have a rug. You can take a dining room or bedroom to another level with the right rug and colour combination.
Colour – bold or not
If your room looks like it has something missing, it might need a bit of colour that can be easily attained with the right rug. Neutral rugs are better for staging when you sell your home. But don’t feel that this may be boring as patterns and designs with a hint of colour can be interesting pieces also.
If you are using multiple rugs in an area, just make sure that the area looks balanced. A rug that is too small or too large under furniture can make the area look awkward. Always measure the area before you buy a rug, so you know that you have the right size for the furniture or area you are styling. Don’t feel you must have a rectangular rug. A unique shape can be a statement piece.
Some dos and don’ts
- Rugs should be large enough in the dining room so that the chairs are on the rug when chairs are pulled out.
- Don’t go too small.
- Do cover high-traffic areas.
- Leave equal amounts of space on all sides. Eighteen inches is the rule of thumb but in smaller areas, you can get away with eight inches on all sides.
- Lastly, don’t place your good rugs in danger. It sometimes can ruin a rug if it is in an area where there may be lots of spills or a doorway entrance.
