We all have the dilemma of where to put our possessions when we start decluttering our home to sell. You don’t want to add a mixture of boxes in every room to distract from the beauty of your home. Our Anne Winch Ottawa Real Estate and Staging Team has put some ideas together to make your storage journey a lot easier.

Storage Unit:

Sometimes you just need a little more space to store your personal items until you sell. A storage unit may be the ticket you need to empty your home of excess items. It will free up space in your home so that our Team can transform and truly emphasize the beauty of your home during the staging process.

Family or Friends:

If you need to store your stuff for a limited time you may be able to call on family or friends. You can always offer to pay to offset the cost of using their garage or basement during the sale of your home.

Garage, basement or shed:

If you decide to use either your garage, basement or shed to store items, make sure that it is orderly and does not overpower the space. Use matching containers or keep boxes to a minimum. If your garage is crowded it may look like a one-car instead of a double garage. You don’t want to lose the sale of your home if your garage or basement looks too small. Try to keep one designated area to stack your boxes.

Other reasons storage can help:

  • Your closing date is pushed back and you need some time before you can move into your new home.
  • You may be going to a job for a limited time and you can store your items while your home is being staged and sold.
  • Consolidating between homes – perhaps you are combining households and you need a holding spot while your home is being sold.

These are just some ideas on why item storage can be so important when selling your home. When you go to store items remember this is not just a storage exercise but a chance to declutter. You don’t want to bring items that you don’t use into your new home. You are going to pack up your house anyway when you move, so decide which to keep, throw, donate or store.

Selling a cluttered home is also harder to do! Appearance is very important in real estate. Remember first impressions can last a long time – you want yours to be memorable.
