The rule of thumb is to go more neutral when selling your homes. However, too many neutral tones everywhere can really make a home look blah. Sometimes you need to infuse a bit of pizzazz when you are selling your home without looking too flamboyant. After all, you want to appeal to everyone’s tastes.

Here are some ideas that our Anne Winch Real Estate Team have to spruce up your home if it is in the “too neutral” range.

Accent paint or wallpaper

Before you paint your home, check out the colour ranges for this year. Neutrals now are not the old boring greys, beiges and whites that we knew before. Depending on your décor these colours come in different shades from cool to warm colours. Pick a focal wall above a fireplace or a dining room wall to add an accent or feature wall with a darker contrasting colour. Add fabrics, cushions or rugs to complement the feature colour.

Wallpaper can also be a wonderful accent if done correctly. There are many patterns and colours of wallpaper now as it is back in vogue. Use it similar to a feature wall to add some dimension and texture to your wall. You just need to paper one wall to give a wonderful look.

Continuity

If your home is an open floor plan you want to have continuity or flow through your kitchen, dining and living areas. You don’t have to paint the same colour throughout but you want the colours to flow from one room to the other.

Layer your accent pieces

In your master bedroom or bathroom, white linens always give a calming look. Paint can be a very subtle ocean tone. Don’t worry if the colour range of your accent pieces doesn’t match completely. This offers a different layered look to your room.

Add different textures to curtains and rugs by coordinating with neutral tones of beiges or creams.

Put your money into furniture and accessories

Even if you just have money for a few accent pieces like a chair, rug or quality curtains this will go a long way in the best look to sell your home. Less is better when you are selling your home as you want your rooms to look lighter and more spacious.

Spruce up your powder room with a designer mirror. Adding a larger mirror to a small bathroom can make the space look lighter and brighter and give the allusion that it is a larger space than it actually is.

Shapes

Add some dimension to your rooms with crown moulding, chair rails or higher baseboards. All these techniques can add a different look to your home. Take careful notice of the shape and size of furniture you purchase or any accessories. Different shapes and sizes are more pleasing to the eye.

These are just some of the ideas that our Team would like to share with you. Always add some pieces of warmth to your home with wood furniture and warm metals like brass or bronze.
