Decluttering is always needed when you are selling your home and with Spring right around the corner, now is the time to roll up your sleeves and purge. Sometimes it is hard to part with certain items but a neat and tidy home, complete with staging will sell quickly. If you have decluttered and are still finding your home messy, here are some items you may not have noticed. Here are our Anne Winch Ottawa Real Estate Team best decluttering ideas:

Pet items

Let’s face it – we love our furry friends! However, numerous dog toys, blankets and beds can be an eyesore when you are trying to make your home look presentable. Now is the time to downsize old pet items and store bedding and food dishes and containers away when you are having an open house or showing.

Counters

Do your counters become a storage place for keys, bills and mail? This can make your kitchen look very untidy. Sort through any paperwork for filing, recycle, or to put in a folder for payment. Always stay on top of your paperwork as it is best to take care of it right away before it becomes a mountain of paper. Keep those counters clutter-free!

Fridge

Do you have your kid’s artwork, numerous magnets and papers stored on the front of your fridge? When you are selling your home, this can be a major distraction, especially if your appliances are included in the sale. Clear any magnets and personal items, children’s sports schedules etc. Not only will it showcase your appliance, but you also may not want your personal items visual to buyers when your home is being showcased.

Bookcases

A beautifully staged bookcase can house many items other than books. If your bookcase is only crammed with books it gives a very untidy appearance. Think of visual art with a few books, a vase, picture frame etc. at various heights.

Electrical cords

If your home uses more artificial light than natural light there often is an octopus-look of electrical cords in your rooms. You want to stay away from this look by tucking cords away to avoid electrical clutter.

Keep floors for furniture and rugs

This may sound like an odd tip but try to reduce items that may be on the floor, such as:

  • Shoes
  • Purses
  • Toys

These items make rooms look bigger and displays your furniture, rugs and hardwood floors to perfection.
