If you are remodelling your kitchen, don’t forget to include a pantry in your design. Usually, when you remodel your kitchen you add more storage space. A kitchen pantry can be an asset for creating more space and storage. Find out what to look for when you are adding a pantry to your kitchen.

What is a pantry?

A pantry can be used to store non-perishable foods such as canned goods, pasta, oil, and boxed and bagged foods. They can also be useful to store small appliances, pots, pans, and bakeware. Since a pantry is enclosed, you can also store potatoes, carrots, and other root vegetables. Some people also use pantries to store extra dinnerware. It is up to you what you wish to store there.

You don’t have to remodel a kitchen to add a pantry. They are usually smaller pieces of furniture off to the side, in or outside your kitchen. They can also be built like a butler’s pantry.

What you should know before you buy

A pantry is a very good and useful storage space that can organize many items. You want it to look good and fit your needs. Check what is in your kitchen cupboards and what you may need to store. You can then get a better idea of how you want to use your pantry. Before you purchase your pantry make sure that it will hold all the items you wish to store.

Space

  • Make sure you have enough space to accommodate your pantry.
  • Measure the width, height, and length you will need.
  • Check the floor space. Do you have room for a door that swings open or sliding doors?
  • Perhaps you just want open shelving.

Style

  • Match your pantry to your cupboard design and style.
  • Match the colour also.
  • Check with your cupboard manufacturer as they may have a pantry option to buy.

Types of kitchen pantries

  • Determine whether you want a free-standing or attached kitchen pantry. Some manufacturers already have pantries that can match your cupboards in style and colour. Secure a free-standing pantry so that it will not tip over.
  • A butler’s pantry is almost a mini kitchen. They are usually located between the kitchen and dining room, or they can be a room adjacent to the kitchen.
