Many of us get restless in the Springtime. We want to roll up our sleeves and get at those tasks we may have left dormant in the Fall. We thought you might like some ideas on what we think you might want to tackle, especially if there will be a “for sale” sign on your property.

As the weather starts to heat up, so does the real estate market. Usually, Spring is the time when most buyers start looking for a new home. It is better to start some of those projects now with Spring right around the corner.

Indoors

If it is too cold yet to tackle the outdoors, there are many projects you can do inside in the meantime. While curb appeal is very important, it is just important to get projects done on the inside too!

Painting

Painting is one of the best ways to improve the look of your home. Dull and dirty walls do not impress anyone. Painting is one DIY project that can be done by almost anyone. Buyers will be looking at your paint job, so if your heart is not in it, this DIY project may not be for you. If it looks anything less than professional, you will be doing more harm than good when you sell your home.

  • Paint all trim and walls in the appropriate colour and paint type.
  • Don’t allow other colours to bleed through. (e.g. painting over dark paint).
  • Hire a pro if you are having problems painting.

Flooring

If you have carpets that are dated, it might be time to add new flooring to your home. There are many different types of flooring for every budget. If you have wood floors, they might just need a good buff and shine. If there are many scratches or damage, you might want to sand and stain in a more neutral colour. There are many different types of flooring to suit your home. Here are some ideas:

  • Bamboo flooring
  • Luxury vinyl
  • Porcelain tiles
  • Cork flooring

Window treatments

Don’t forget about window coverings in your home. Most buyers like to look outside the windows to view the lot. You might want to have more light and airy window coverings for the Spring and Summer. If your blinds are outdated it might be time to replace them. Remember to always match any window coverings with the tone of the paint and furniture in your room. You want to enhance your windows not make them an eyesore.

Deep clean

When was the last time you cleaned your home from top to bottom? If you are planning to sell your home, it must be inviting. Nothing says that your home is well-cared for than to have an immaculately clean and de-cluttered home. Here are some ways you can deep clean. Besides your regular cleaning, don’t forget to:

  • Clean all cooking surfaces, including inside and outside of the stove and fridge.
  • Clean all lighting fixtures, especially chandeliers.
  • Deep scrub tile or porcelain floors.
  • Clean all windows – including any trim and ledges.
  • Make any minor repairs that are required. (Cupboards that are off track, towel bars not secured, etc.)

These are just some ideas on some DIY projects you can start before Spring arrives. Our Anne Winch Real Estate Team would be pleased to make any suggestions on what needs to be done to get your home on the market. As Spring is a great time to sell, it is a perfect time to get a head start before your home is listed.
