Let’s face it, living through a renovation can be a little daunting. Some people choose to perhaps live with friends or relatives during this process. Others may not have a choice and have to tough it out and live through the renovations. We thought we’d give you a few tips to quell the frustration a home renovation can bring.

Let’s prepare!

You really need to manage your expectations during the renovation process. You might think it is not going to be that bad but sometimes renovations can prolong, and patience can be tested.

  • Keep your living space separate from the construction.
  • Create some zones to live in on one side away from the construction.
  • Ensure the room being renovated is completely cleared out before construction to keep debris away from your belongings.

Which room do you start?

Always set a plan in motion when you are doing multiple rooms or areas.

  • Tackle each room one at a time.
  • Don’t renovate all bathrooms at once and have nowhere to tidy up.
  • Choosing one room at a time will eliminate the amount of time each is out of commission.
    Have a makeshift kitchen area.

Dust is everywhere!

Just remember as soon as you start renovating and taking down walls, dust will follow you. You might wipe down areas and then the dust appears again. No amount of dusting, vacuuming, or sweeping is going to get rid of all the debris. Keep doors shut and add plastic sheeting to close off the area.

Sleeping in may be a thing of the past!

Most construction crews arrive first thing in the morning. Be aware that your sleep may be broken to accommodate the different trades that will be coming and going. A house with no heating, no doors and fewer home comforts can be challenging. You will have to keep track of the plumbers and electricians and perhaps check that the rooms are painted the right way with the right colour of paint. You will need to track everything – lists, lists and more lists.

Some other things to consider.

  • Kids love to play everywhere – you might need eyes in the back of your head to keep them safe.
  • You learn to be an Olympic hurdler as you make your way around deliveries of drywall, fixtures, and fittings.
  • Things may take longer than expected.
  • Your tradespeople may become part of the family – treat them with respect and have a good relationship with them.
  • Your camp stove and BBQ will be your new kitchen.

After all is said and done, you will have a beautiful new home! It can be a bit trying when you are on-site but just keep your eyes on the prize. You will appreciate everything that’s been accomplished and all the effort that went into the end result.
